It’s a Boufal and Djenepo Masterclass

Nathan Redmond has for some time been Southampton’s most dependable performer. As colleagues around him struggled to make an impact the attacker has been energetically providing the sides only consistent source of threat.

The Englishman’s ankle injury (Evening Express) against Fulham appeared to be a major setback and one which Saints looked ill-equipped to deal with. Despite the fantastic goal against Brighton new signing Moussa Djenepo is still acclimating to the club and the Premier League, while Sofiane Boufal was chucked out on loan last season after failing to find favour with previous boss Mark Hughes.

In spite of the potential hurdles the two flare players have hit the ground running with exciting performances that have changed the course of matches. Saturday’s action saw the duo star as they secured all three points for the side.

Boufal proved a continual headache for the Blades’ backline as he not only forged chances, but also used his bag of tricks to ensure the ball stuck with him like glue. The Moroccan’s skills combined with his tireless work rate made him a true standout of the afternoon.

Djenepo meanwhile had a slower start to proceedings after being forced to pick up a deeper role by the odd absence of professional left back Ryan Bertrand. Ultimately though the Malian proved the difference with a sublime build up and finish. The attacker first held off the intentions of Oliver Norwood, despite being held by the arm. The international then Cooley sidestepped three defenders, to bury the ball in the back of the net.

With the two players now shifting into top gear, it offers the club plenty of options to unlock games. Assuming the pair continue to stamp their authority on the Premier League, significant respite and competition has arrived for Nathan Redmond.

Given the different style of the three players the gaffer now has different weapons at his disposal to open up rivals. It is no longer the case that opposition teams simply shut down Redmond to prevent a quick counter attack, but will now have to deal with varying threats and approaches.
