Gunn Firing on All Cylinders

Since establishing himself as Southampton’s number one, Angus Gunn has been one of the club’s most consistent performers. The early knockings of the season have seen the shot stopper make multiple crucial saves to salvage vital points for his team.

Gunn’s rich vein of form continued in Sheffield as he was called upon again to save the day. Not only was he a safe pair of hands as attempts were fired in, but also pulled off result saving last gasp interventions.

Notable heroics included an early one-on-one denial of former Saint and youth product David McGoldrick. After receiving an excellent pass from McBurnie, McGoldrick bore down on goal as the keeper came out to meet him. With the striker seemingly certain to net, the goalie got down quickly to parry the ball away with his legs.

The 23-year-old then achieved a similar feet late on against the same foe.

This time McGoldrick received the ball in the 6-yard box courtesy of a well worked throw in. The front man hit a fiery first-time shot on the angle, only to once again be denied by the legs of Angus.

From Kelvin Davis to Alex McCarthy Southampton have been blessed in recent years with consistently strong goal keeping options. With a good footballing IQ and excellent athleticism Gunn looks to be continuing that run of fortune.
