Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl was proud of his team’s efforts as they beat local rivals Portsmouth 4-0 on Tuesday evening.

The convincing victory saw them advance to the Fourth-Round of the Carabao Cup and bounce back from defeat to Bournemouth in true style.

A first-half brace from Danny Ings and further strikes from Cedric and Nathan Redmond rounded off the evening for the travelling Saints fans and gave them local bragging rights until the next South Coast derby.

Speaking to Sky Sports following the match, Hasenhuttl said:

"“It was an unbelievable atmosphere in the stadium, I don’t think I’ve ever seen such an atmosphere as this. I’m very proud of my team and I think our fans are very proud of the team now, and this was exactly the kind of game that we needed today. In our first attack we got the goal and that helps massively. Ingsy (Danny Ings) did a fantastic job today with two important goals.”"

The meeting between Saints and Pompey at Fratton Park was the first South Coast derby for seven years and the result further strengthened Saints’ record in the fixture.

They now have 20 wins in games against their arch-rivals, whilst there have also been 10 draws and nine losses in the past.

After two clinical goals, childhood Saints fan Danny Ings has written his name into folklore at St Mary’s alongside other notable contributions against Pompey.

More from Saints Marching

Ralph Hasenhuttl and his men will find out their opponents in Round-Four following the conclusion of the Third-Round fixtures on Wednesday evening.

If they are consistent enough in the Premier League to secure a comfortable finish, there is no reason why they cannot progress far into the latter stages of the Carabao Cup this season.

One team that they won’t be playing are Spurs after they suffered a shock loss on penalties to League Two side Colchester United.

This will be a result that intrigues Saints as they prepare to face Mauricio Pochettino’s side on Saturday when they return to league action.

Whilst the North London club will likely field a stronger side at the weekend, their patchy form is certainly something that can be taken advantage of by Saints.

However, they will also have to take new surrounding in with their first trip to the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
