Chelsea 2-4 Saints, 2001/02 Premiership

An emphatic victory for Saints away at Stamford Bridge as they worked towards an eventual 11th-placed finish in the top-flight.

James Beattie opened the scoring in the seventh minute, but Saints found themselves 2-1 down by half-time after strikes from Eidur Gudjohnsen and Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink.

However, Gordon Strachan’s visitors to St Mary’s produced a brilliant turnaround in the second period to claim a vital three points.

Marian Pahars levelled the scores, Chris Marsden put Saints in front and then James Beattie made sure of the result with his second of the afternoon on New Year’s day 2002.
