Manager, Goalkeeper and Defenders

Ralph Hasehnhuttl, Manager – 5

Went with the 4-3-3 system giving Shane Long his first Premier League start of the year.  Restoring Yan Valery to the side appears to be his best move.  Has to be disappointed with the overall mentality of the team and will need to focus on this in training.  Someone needs to question why he leaves it late to make changes.  Troubling times with a difficult schedule continuing through November, and he has not found the formation/lineup to make an impact.

Angus Gunn, Goalkeeper – 5

No one may ever know what he was thinking on the first goal.  Gunn froze in position and allowed Abraham to flick a prayer over his head and break any belief the Saints had.  He made a couple decent saves, particularly the one on Hudson-Odoi which kept them in the game for the second half.  However, his play left a lot to be desired, and it may be time to go to the more experienced keeper behind him.

Ryan Bertrand, Left-back – 3

Did not get a single touch or pass right in the first half.  Lacks confidence and is seen barking at opponents and teammates rather than contributing positively to the contest.  It does not help that there is no challenger behind him at left-back.  It’s starting to make a lot of sense why Hasenhuttl was experimenting at left-back, and a healthy Djenepo should displace him.

Maya Yoshida, Centre-back – 7

Nearly saved the opening Tammy Abraham goal off the line, and defended well on set pieces.  Sent a few errant passes forward which did not help the possession game.  However, he was one of the clear stand outs in a Saints’ side that lacked few positives on the afternoon.

Jan Bednarek, Centre-back – 4

Arguably at fault for goals number two and three.  Misplayed a header which started the Mason Mount counter attack and failed to close down Kante resulting in a deflected goal off of his back.  Out of possession on the 4th and clinching goal, allowing a reverse pass from Pulisic.  Let’s hope it was just an off day.

Yan Valery, Right-back – 8

Was the star of the show in the first half.  His winding run past five Chelsea defenders to set up Danny Ings’ goal is a reminder of what he can bring and Cedric Soares cannot.  Definitely the bright spot on Sunday, and hopefully has rebuilt his confidence for the rest of the season.
