Four Southampton players have been named in the ‘worst rated’ Premier League team of the season so far.

The team has been put together by statistics-based website WhoScored.com and sees an 11 made up of those who have performed worst in their positions (5+ starts) according to the site’s ratings.

Angus Gunn (6.19/10), Ryan Bertrand (6.11/10), Maya Yoshida (6.12/10) and Che Adams (6.27/10) all feature and make Saints the most represented top-flight club in the team.

Whilst there have been other Saints candidates who could find themselves in this unique side, it is no surprise that these players are in.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team have conceded the most goals in the Premier League so far this season and so it’s clear why a goalkeeper and defender would qualify here.

Maya Yoshida has been a fairly reliable presence for Saints in past years but he had a particularly horrible evening in the embarrassing 9-0 loss to Leicester City back at the end of October.

WhoScored.com put his display in that game as one of the worst three of any player this season and gave him a mark of 4.49/10 – perhaps why he is in ahead of any of the other Saints centre-backs.

Interestingly, Yoshida has stats that are significantly worse than the likes of Jan Bednarek and Jannik Vestergaard, with 1.1 tackles, 0.6 interceptions and 0.3 blocks per game.

For Angus Gunn, the situation is similar. Since last season, his form has dipped considerably and he has the worst save rate of any Premier League goalkeeper this season at 54.5% (according to WhoScored’s written piece).

Ryan Bertrand has made six starts this season and has disappointing stats too considering his status as one of the more experience players currently with Saints.

The former England international has made under one tackle, one interception and 0.4 clearances per game.

Further forward, Che Adams has been somewhat unlucky and seems to put a lot of effort into his performances.

However, the fact that he has missed five big chances according to the Premier League’s official stats.

Building up some momentum will now be key for Saints’ survival hopes this season and that will be reliant on players like Yoshida, Bertrand, Gunn and Adams improving their individual displays.
