Manager, Goalkeeper, and Defenders

Ralph Hasenhuttl, Manager – 7

The manager kept his goalkeeper, defence, and midfield the same, just resting Stuart Armstrong for Sofiane Boufal.  Danny Ings was always coming back into the side and fans were excited to see him paired with Che Adams.  Did not hesitate to bring Moussa Djenepo on when chasing the game.  Found a system he trusts and it appears that the Saints will be in every game for the remainder of the campaign.

Alex McCarthy, Goalkeeper – 6

Absolutely nothing to do in the first half as Crystal Palace sat back and organized looking to counter.  Was never forced to make a difficult save and beaten soundly on the Tompkins header.

Ryan Bertrand, Left-Back – 6

Works his hardest on the overlapping run, and delivered a positive cross early on.  Conceded the attack to Boufal and Djenepo when Redmond slid to the other side.  Hard to find fault in another professional performance.

Jan Bednarek, Centre-Back – 6

A couple clumsy first half fouls and a back post chance to score from a JWP free kick marked a mediocre game.  Was pretty good in the air, denying Ayew chances to turn, but is still getting outperformed by his partner on match day.

Jack Stephens, Centre-Back – 7

Another solid performance, but not much to do.  Covered his back line well and saw Zaha out of play when the team was in danger.  Did get beat by Tomkins for the Palace goal, but Saints fans need to continue to give this guy credit.

Cedric Soares, Right-Back – 5

Drew a scary matchup with Zaha, but started well.  However, was run ragged in the 16th minute before being saved by VAR. Delivered 3 or 4 crosses in the first half and none found a teammate.  Continued to pour in crosses in the second half which all missed their target.  Had so much time and space today to create something in the attack, but defended pretty well for a second straight match.
