Southampton vs Huddersfield: Saints Player Ratings in Victory
By Erik Franzo
Shane Long, Striker – 7
Scored his first goal of the year, but VAR showed he was offside by maybe his big toe. Didn’t give up on a Danso cross in the second half and nodded in front of Will Smallbone for the first goal. Found more of the ball than his partner, but rarely, if ever linked up with him. Saints fans are finally taking notice that a professional striker does more than just score goals.
Che Adams, Striker – 6
With Danny Ings resting on the bench, it was time for the big summer signing to prove his worth. First half saw little of the ball with the opponents defending deep. Best moment was a driving run forward to setup Smallbone, otherwise was left underutilized. It was a tough game for his skill set and it probably does not feel good considering two teenagers scored on their debuts. Did get the assist for the second goal, switching play out to Vokins.
Stuart Armstrong, Substitute Attacking-Midfielder – 6
Relived Will Smallbone with 20 minutes to play. Took a few minutes to get into the game, but helped see the team into the 4th round.
Cedric Soares, Substitute Right-Back – N/A
Entered for Danso who looked tired to close out the game. Contributed with a big block in the 81st minute, but not enough time for a rating.
Michael Obafemi, Substitute Attacking-Midfielder – N/A
Finished the match with Boufal exhausted and nicked up. A couple of driving runs, and a decent header to create a shot for Shane Long was his impact.
