Southampton will host Middlesbrough or Tottenham at St Mary’s in the Fourth-Round of the FA Cup.

The tie will take place on the weekend of the 25th January and is due to be played between away league meetings with Crystal Palace and Liverpool.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men reached this stage of the competition after a comfortable 2-0 victory over Huddersfield Town, where academy talents Will Smallbone and Jake Vokins proved to be the match-winners.

Middlesbrough and Spurs played out a 1-1 draw in the North East on Sunday and are set for a replay in North London on Tuesday 14th January.

Jonathan Woodgate’s men opened the scoring at the Riverside Stadium after 50 minutes but were pegged back by Jose Mourinho’s visitors when Lucas Moura equalised after an hour.

Saints last played Middlesbrough back in the 2016/17 season when Boro were promoted but relegated again come the end of May.

More from Saints Marching

Then managed by Claude Puel, Saints were victorious on both meetings in that campaign – a 1-0 home win thanks to a stunning strike from Sofiane Boufal and a 2-1 away win thanks to goals from Jay Rodriguez and Nathan Redmond.

The last meeting with Spurs was much more recent and perhaps a lot more memorable.

Saints beat Jose Mourinho’s men 1-0 at St Mary’s on New Year’s Day after a superb winning goal from the in-form Danny Ings. The win saw them make it 10 points claimed from the last 12 on offer too.

The last time that Saints played in the FA Cup Fourth-Round was in the 2017/18 season when they beat Watford before going on to the semi-finals at Wembley.

Apart from that run to the last four, the club’s record in the FA Cup has been rather unremarkable.

The Fifth-Round has been reached just three times in the last ten years, but maybe this season will be different with Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men seemingly hitting form at just the right time.

10 changes were made to face Huddersfield on Saturday but this was due to many first-choice players playing seven games in December.
