Southampton: Ings hilariously corrects reporter on his season’s goals tally

Southampton striker Danny Ings proved to be the hero again on Saturday after scoring the match-winner against Leicester City.

His poke through Kasper Schmeichel’s legs in the 80th minute was his 14th Premier League goal of the season and fired the Saints to within six points of the top five.

However, it seems that some people still need to be reminded of Ings’ exploits so far this campaign.

During a post-match interview after the game on Saturday, a reporter got the figures slightly wrong by saying he had scored 13 league goals and then asked whether he is “aiming for the golden boot”.

Ings – alert as he is in the penalty box these days – made sure he got the credit he really deserves by saying: “Is it 13 or 14? I think it’s 14!”

There was clearly no hard feelings in the situation though, with Ings and the reporter laughing off the mistake.

In all competitions, the total number of goals scored by the former Liverpool man is an even more impressive 16 after his memorable double against Portsmouth in the Carabao Cup.

It’s hard to argue that he will not go on to make that total even larger and even go past 20 goals come May.

With Euro 2020 just around the corner too, Ings has been tipped for a call up to the England squad given that he is one of the most in-form strikers in the country at the moment.

Harry Kane’s recent hamstring injury has sparked a debate about other options for Gareth Southgate, and Ings does have some very good competition.

Tammy Abraham returned to Chelsea this season and has really found his feet in the top-flight, whilst Marcus Rashford’s form for Manchester United has been superb of late.

They have 13 and 14 Premier League goals respectively, but another Englishman sits at the top of the scoring charts.

Jamie Vardy has been crucial to another strong campaign from Leicester City and has 17 in the top-flight. But the fact that he retired from international football may count against him being called up.
