Danny Ings

Ings was involved at both ends and played a key part in Burnley’s opener. An early corner was drifted in by Ashley Westwood but Ings chose to leave the ball rather than clear it. Unfortunately for the Southampton striker, the ball crept in at the near post and in doing so, left the home team with a mountain to climb.

It’s unclear whether Ings received a call from a teammate or whether he simply misjudged the flight of the ball but either way, it was frustrating for the home supporters who had braved the stormy conditions. In fairness to Ings, he displayed the mental fortitude to seek redemption for his error with a lovely curled effort, which beat the underworked Pope in the Burnley goal.

Ings ran a lot for the common cause but was limited in terms of chances which came his way. With Boufal going off injured and Redmond already missing, it was left to Armstrong and Djenepo to provide the creativity. The former worked hard but the latter was unable to stamp his mark on the game. Nevertheless, Ings will remain positive that his goals can fire Saints to the sanctuary of mid table and in doing so, earn a much coveted England call up.
