Southampton players Ryan Bertrand and Michael Obafemi took part in a pancake making challenge recently to mark Shrove Tuesday.

Better known by most as ‘Pancake day’, Shrove Tuesday is an important part of the Christian calendar and marks the day before the start of Lent.

Bertrand and Obafemi were chosen to showcase their skills – or, more accurately, lack of skills – when it came to donning an apron and chef’s hat.

The video – via the Saints YouTube channel – began with the pair cracking eggs and mixing the batter for their pancakes.

Once the cooking process was underway, it was soon time for the flipping to start – and this is where the cracks in Obafemi’s technique began to show.

The striker’s first flip resulted in pieces of pancake flying out of the frying pan, whilst Bertrand was delighted to nail his first attempt.

At the plating up stage, it appeared that Bertrand’s creation would be much more appetising – Obafemi’s dish seemed to be covered more in lime juice than actual pancake.

However, the Saints youth produce would have the last laugh when teammate Moussa Djenepo arrived to judge their efforts, with Bertrand given a 6/10 and Obafemi a 6.5/10.

Both players have played their part for Saints this season and could still provide important moments in the remaining games of the campaign.

Bertrand has made 25 appearances in all competitions and continues to be a vital player despite some presumptions that he isn’t enjoying his football at St Mary’s anymore.

His role as a senior player also involves helping younger players like Obafemi, and their understanding of each other was key in this video.

Obafemi has taken his development on a step further this year and has scored twice in 18 games – one being a memorable strike against Chelsea back in December.

Despite him having a healthy amount of first-team football under his belt already, it is important to remember that Obafemi is only 19 still and will take more time to develop.

However, it appears that he has the perfect manager in Ralph Hasenhuttl to bring out the best in him and to help him continue to improve.
