Manager, Goalkeeper and Defenders

Ralph Hasenhuttl, Manager – 5

Right not to risk Ings after a slight knock, but not fielding Yan Valery or Kyle Walker-Peters was strange.

Tried to change Saints’ shape and the game in the second period but didn’t work, so substitutions go down as defensive ones. His post-match comments also suggest his players were not focused on dealing with the threat they knew West Ham provided.

Alex McCarthy, Goalkeeper – 3

Four saves in the game but his performance will be remembered for a horrible mistake that gifted Haller West Ham’s second goal.

James Ward-Prowse, Right-Back – 5

Struggled badly against Antonio early on and did look like a man playing out of position. Recovered well though and set up the Saints equaliser.

Jan Bednarek, Centre-Back – 4

Turned too easily and seen running back after opposition forwards far too often.

Jack Stephens, Centre-Back – 3

One of his worst performances since coming back into the team and was dragged out of position. No aerial duels won shows just how much dominance West Ham’s strikers had over the Saints man.

Ryan Bertrand, Left-Back – 6

Perhaps the best of the Saints defenders, but that’s not saying a lot from an otherwise disjointed team display.
