Manager, Goakeeper and Defenders

Ralph Hasenhuttl, Manager – 7

Alex McCarthy, Goalkeeper – 9

Absolutely brilliant and more than made up for his mistake at West Ham last week.

One incredible triple save early on, stopped Matt Ritchie’s penalty and also made a great stop to deny Dwight Gayle’s point-blank header.

Yan Valery, Right-Back – 5

His first start for a long, long time and he looked rusty early on. He grew into the first-half well and got forward to join the attack, but his performance will be remembered for his mistake that led to Allan Saint-Maximin’s winning goal.

Jack Stephens, Centre-Back – 6

Some nice direct passes forward into Ings and Long early on but distribution became difficult when Saints went a man down.

Jan Bednarek, Centre-Back – 6

Better number defensively than Stephens but less successful when it came to distribution from the back. Three aerial duels won and eight clearances.

Ryan Bertrand, Left-Back – 7

One excellent last man tackle after catching Saint-Maximin with the Frenchman looking a certainty to score. More passes than any other Saints man and five blocked crosses too.
