Southampton are still in the middle of a rebuilding process and will need manager Ralph Hasenhuttl to commit and be at the centre of future plans.

Some player contracts still need to be negotiated and renewed, but it appears that Saints have had a breakthrough with their current boss.

According to a report from the Sun, Hasenhuttl has agreed in principle to a new three-year deal on the South Coast to enable him to put further plans in place.

Via previous reports from the likes of the Daily Echo, the Austrian feels it is his duty to commit to the ongoing project at St Mary’s after the club stood by him at the beginning of the 2019/20 campaign.

Results were very poor – not least the 9-0 loss to Leicester City – and consistent work had to be put in to turn things around.

Things have improved now though and Saints currently sit in 14th place in the Premier League table, although they lost 1-0 to Newcastle in their last top-flight game back on 7th March.

More from Saints Marching

Signing a new deal will give comfort and time for the partnership between Hasenhuttl and Saints to flourish.

There can be no doubt that Saints have the potential to play some really exciting football under his leadership, but other elements need to be put in place for this to happen fully.

For one, the squad on offer to Hasenhuttl need to be improved when the club can put significant funds forward.

This will enable him to choose players who he knows can carry out specific jobs and roles in his team to the best of their ability.

The academy must also be utilised to ensure that Saints’ young players reach their potential.

Will Smallbone and Jake Vokins have broken through and made an impression at first-team level this year, and youth talent will be vital for the full time that Hasenhuttl is at St Mary’s.

This is what he did so successfully with RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga so Saints must help to provide similar tools to carry out the job in England.
