Southampton midfielder Will Smallbone became the latest man to sign a new contract at St Mary’s when he put pen to paper on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old committed his next four years to Saints and will hope to continue his promising development so far between now and 2024.

Handing a youth academy product such a deal really does suggest that Smallbone is very exciting player who could play a huge part in seasons to come.

2019/20 has seen him take his first steps into first-team action with two league appearances and one FA Cup game, in which he scored the opening goal.

Despite his youth and inexperience, he looked completely at home in the Saints midfield.

The main thing to notice about his displays so far is the technique that he seems to have whilst in possession of the ball.

He moves easily with the ball at his feet – perhaps due to his slight build that helps with agility and speed. The way that he finished his goal against Huddersfield in the cup was also impressive.

More from Saints Marching

Some clubs would probably want a player in his position to bulk up and add strength to his game, but that may not be so advisable for Saints as they look to nurture Smallbone.

Instead, looking to help him apply his natural ability into areas where he can influence a match could be what is needed to help him reach his full potential.

It’s fair to say that current Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl will have a big part to play in this, and that is exactly what is shown on the Saints website as Smallbone and Hasenhuttl react to the news.

Firstly, the player explains that his managers own commitment to the club was a big motivation in him wanting to continue the early stages of his career at St Mary’s. If Smallbone is still there in 2024, he will have spent 16 years playing for the club’s various youth teams and beyond.

Hasenhuttl also notes how he sees Smallbone taking on his style of football well and dealing with immense pressure, but importantly states that he still has a lot to improve – true of any 20-year-old player across the country.

Now it is vital that Saints continue to ease him into a bigger squad role. He needs more games next season, but not too many as to reduce the time he has to assess himself and step back out of the limelight for a moment.
