Romeu is also reportedly going to be given a new deal by Saints, and the club’s thinking is perhaps similar to Ryan Bertrand’s situation.

Both are valuable senior men in a time where Saints’ movement in the transfer market may be limited by the financial implications of the Coronavirus and it is better to keep hold of the core of the squad than let them drift away in such an uncertain time.

Romeu looked to be on is way out back in January when interest from Spain came about and he was seemingly surplus to requirements at St Mary’s.

However, things look to have changed now and the Spaniard could have a big part to play next season.
