Danny Ings Going For Gold

With his double at Vicarage Road Danny Ings is now second in The Golden Boot race with 18 goals this league season. Only compatriot Jamie Vardy stands in the way of top spot on 19 Premier League strikes.

A player in Southampton colours has never won the Strikers top prize but Ings now appears to be well positioned to change that. The marksman is closing in on a club record set by a Saints legend.

Matt Le Tissier currently sets the club benchmark with 25 EPL goals from way back in 1993/94. The record came during a time in which the young league played 42 matches. Although as the official Premier League website fairly points out Le Tissier only actually played “38” times.

James Beattie holds the top spot in the modern era with 23 times on the score sheet in 2002/03.

Ings will surely have to break or at least match those achievements if he wants to take home the shiny footwear.

The last two seasons have seen the respective winners net 22 times during the campaign. However with six games to go and that milestone already insight for the top contenders in the race, that figure is going to be nowhere near enough to take the plaudits.

With another classy double in the bag, there’s no reason why the Southampton favourite can’t Break new ground both personally and for the club.
