Goal of the Season

Chelsea Nathan Redmond

in this category there were plenty of candidates to pick from. Danny Ings’ opener against Portsmouth was glorious, Danny Ings goal winner against Tottenham was sublime, while Danny Ings clincher against Leicester healed the wounds of a once disastrous defeat.

Ings could quite conceivably have a category all to himself and he’d  probably deserve it too. However, it might surprise you to learn that others not named Danny or Ings did in fact net for the Saints.

Che Adams stunned Manchester City as he opened his SFC account, Moussa Djenepo showcased his silky footwork not to mention his power against Sheffield United, while Michael Obafemi stole a late point at Old Trafford.

All of these would be worthy winners if it weren’t for the class of the victor.

As alluded to previously Obafemi opened the scoring away at Chelsea, with a cool finish. It is however the Hampshire outfit’s second goal that takes the prize. Nathan Redmond may have eventually picked up the goalscoring credit, but it was built by the team and pulled off by the supreme efforts of Stuart Armstrong.

The move began with a Southampton Throw-in just short of the Chelsea penalty area and saw the ball being calmly worked round the pitch. The majority of the red-and-white army received a pass, before things kicked into high gear.

Armstrong receives possession just inside the Blue’s half before flicking the ball effortlessly past a Chelsea man. The Scot manages a magnificent exchange with a colleague before charging forward.

The total football experience not yet completed, the midfielder chests  the ball past a helpless defender and then finds an excellent cross for the oncoming Nathan Redmond. The number 22 makes no mistake as he just gets the better of Kepa.

Teamwork plus a slice of individual brilliance equals a magnificent goal of the season.
