The Second-Round tie that Saints played in the Carabao Cup last season was a memorable one for the fans.
Excitement built towards a clash against Portsmouth from the day that the draw was made and it turned out to be a routine win for Saints in the end.
Danny Ings burst onto the scene with two expertly taken goals to give Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side a 2-0 lead at half-time. Further goals from Cedric and Nathan Redmond then made it a comfortable and enjoyable night for the fans in the away end at Fratton Park.
They then travelled away to Manchester City in the Third-Round but fell to a 3-1 defeat – although the game saw Saints put in a respectable display considering that they had lost 9-0 to Leicester just four days earlier.
