Manager, Goalkeeper and Defenders

Ralph Hasenhuttl – 4

Has to take his share of responsibility for the defeat after sticking blindly to a high line in spite of the threat posed by Kane and Son. Although let down in terms of the lack of new signings to date, he could have stemmed the tide by reinforcing the defence and stifling the space afforded to the Spurs forward line.

Alex McCarthy – 2

Abject. Too slow off his line, positioning was poor throughout and doesn’t command his defence. Very little positive springs to mind for a keeper who repeatedly blows hot and cold.

Ryan Bertrand – 4

An excellent first half performance, as a willing runner for Djenepo and Armstrong to link up with. Second half however, he went absent without leave repeatedly as Kane played through ball after through ball from the Southampton left. Far below his usual standards, he must use his experience to lead the back four.

Jack Stephens – 1

Nope, nothing good to report. Next…

Jan Bednarek – 2

Not much better than his defensive partner, this was one of the Polish centre back’s worst performances for Saints. Continually caught out of position by Son, it is evident Bednarek and Stephens lack the pace or agility to play a line that high. Salisu anyone?

Kyle Walker- Peters – 4

As with Bertrand on the opposite flank, a positive showing in the first half. The highlight of course, was a lovely weighted ball, which played Ings through for the opener.

Lacked protection at times and as the game went on, the Southampton right back got worse. Yet to show his best this season after a promising few months over the summer.

Midfielders

Stuart Armstrong – 7

Looked very lively upon his return and roamed freely across the forward line. Linked up nicely with Djenepo and showed what Saints missed last week at Selhurst Park.

The Scot repeatedly found little pockets of space in between Spurs midfield and defence, which Mourinho’s men struggled to close down. Tired as the game went on before being substituted.

Oriol Romeu – 3

Although he played with his usual tenacity, he was slow in possession and earned himself an early yellow for a lunge on former teammate Hojbjerg.

Looked prime for a dismissal and was wisely substituted by Hasenhuttl. He must learn to be more disciplined in games like this as he could have made a difference with his defensive screening in the second half.

James Ward-Prowse – 4

Another Jekyll and Hyde performance from the Saints skipper. Played well in the opening period with some nice build up play but struggled alongside Smallbone in second half. Needs to be more of a presence in losing situations, especially as captain. Wasted a couple of good free kicks.

Moussa Djenepo- 7

A rare bright spark for Southampton, he worked hard, causing Tottenham real problems with his unpredictable and direct running. Although he did wane somewhat in the second half, Djenepo was positive in his approach and his performance will have given his manager food for thought in Redmond’s absence.
