Southampton striker Danny Ings will start for England in their international friendly with Wales this evening.

According to reports from the Daily Mail and the Telegraph, Ings is set to benefit from England regulars being unavailable and will start in attack alongside Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish and Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

First-choice forwards Jadon Sancho and Raheem Sterling will miss out on this game and this looks to have handed opportunities to others to impress.

If Ings does indeed start tonight, he will be getting his third international cap at senior level.

His first appearance for the Three Lions came in a European Qualifier against Lithuania back in 2015, whilst his form for Saints during the 2019/20 season earned him a 22-minute appearance versus Iceland in September.

More from Saints Marching

Given his performances in front of goal in the last campaign and the way in which he has started 2020/21, a start for England is the least that Ings deserves.

He was in the race for the Premier League’s golden boot right up to the final weekend of 2019/20 before eventually finishing joint-second with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on 22 goals – just one behind winner Jamie Vardy.

The 28-year-old has seemingly kept up this form in Saints’ opening four league games this time around too with three goals so far.

A well-taken double against Spurs was followed up by the match-winning strike in a tight affair with Burnley 12 days ago.

An England start is also overdue for Grealish and Calvert-Lewin. The former continues to be the main creative and goalscoring force for Aston Villa whilst Calvert-Lewin has transformed himself into one of the best finishers in the Premier League.
