Southampton: Saints defender set to sign new three-year contract
By Marc Walker
Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand is set to sign a new three-year contract at St Mary’s to take his spell at the club to nine years.
According to a report from goal.com reporter Nizaar Kinsella, the 30-year-old will confirm new terms on the South Coast soon and commit a large part of his remaining career to Saints in the process.
Bertrand remains the first-choice and most senior left-back in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad and continues to prove his worth on and off the pitch.
Despite being a player that often does not show his emotions when playing, his experience will be a huge part in helping to bring through the fresh group of youngsters on the fringes of the squad at the moment.
To date, Bertrand – a Champions League winner with Chelsea – has made 212 appearances since joining Saints back in 2014 and has been an ever-present in all competitions so far this season.

Bertrand signing to commit to the club will also provide another boost in Saints’ charge under Ralph Hasenhuttl.
Hasenhuttl himself has signed a new deal and has been joined by James Ward-Prowse, Shane Long, Will Smallbone, Jake Vokins and Nathan Tella in committing their short and long term futures to St Mary’s.
Strong links also suggest that star man Danny Ings will also be handed a new contract soon and that Jack Stephens is also set to follow in the near future.
This strong core of players mixed with talented youth products pushing through and new signings that have excellent potential has made things look very promising.
In many ways, Saints have made the all important breakthrough here that they needed to push back to being a top half team once again.
Everything fell apart for a while when former manager Ronald Koeman left after rejecting a new deal, but this time Hasenhuttl has chosen to commit to the cause at a crucial time. Now, the players are also following instead of pursuing moves away.
