Southampton: Saints looking at young Accrington Stanley goalkeeper
By Joe Mcindoe
Southampton are taking a peek at Accrington Stanley Goalkeeper Toby Savin.
A report from Football Insider has suggested that Southampton are keeping close tabs on Accrington Stanley’s Toby Savin. With Angus Gunn sent out on loan and Fraser Forster’s future uncertain, it would appear SFC are looking for young fresh blood to revitalise competition.
The report notes the goalkeeper’s budding credentials as a potential international star. Last season the young Englishman received a call up to the “England goalkeeping development camp at St George’s Park.”
Savin has started all seven league games for his current employers and has conceded 10 goals this term.
The 20-year-old also featured in the club’s league cup clash with Burton Albion. The stopper help to keep the scores level and was only defeated on penalties.
If SFC, were to plump for the keeper’s services in January there would be stiff competition ahead of him.

Current number one Alex McCarthy has started the 2020 2021 campaign in fine form. In his first six Premier League matches this season, McCarthy has kept three clean sheets.
This includes shutouts against Burnley and early table toppers Everton. The 30-year-old appears to have carried his strong form over from last season’s ‘Project Restart ‘. Last season saw him keep a clean sheet against both Chelsea and Manchester city.
The number two spot on the other hand remains uncertain.
Fraser Forster currently holds the deputy position, but his future at the club is up in the air. The former Celtic man hasn’t played for the Hampshire outfit since the 18/19 season.
The 32-year-old returned to his old stomping ground during the previous campaign to much success. Forster claimed 14 clean sheets for Celtic, while on loan.
Angus Gunn meanwhile, hasn’t featured for the red-and-white army since that most horrendous of nights. No prizes for guessing which one.
The keeper has temporarily at least, been deemed surplus to requirements. Gunn completed a loan move to Stoke city during the summer transfer window.
If SFC does make a mid-season move for Savin, it may be a signal of intent to move on some of the old guard and begin developing the future.
