Southampton have been dealt a blow after news that star striker Danny Ings will be out for at least a month through injury.

Ings went off with a knee issue at Aston Villa on Sunday but an initial scan revealed little damage as Saints described the results as “favourable”.

However, the 28-year-old experienced some pain in training this week and the decision was made to sort his problem with minor surgery.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Premier League fixture with Newcastle, Ralph Hasenhuttl said:

"“The worst thing is maybe Danny Ings. We said after the game that we hoped it wasn’t bad.“It could have been much worse, but at the moment he’s out for maybe 4-6 weeks. He’ll have a small surgery tomorrow. He’s definitely out for now. It’s a small surgery but a necessary one.”"

Journalists close to the club have confirmed that Ings’ problem is to do with the meniscus cartilage – the ‘shock absorber’ that reduces impact on the knee joint.

Without surgery, the issue would have perhaps taken even longer to sort. Surgery will mean Saints have to find other goalscoring options for 4-6 weeks but will mean more time on the pitch for Ings in the longer term.

In terms of matches that he will miss, Saints will have to find a way to win without him for potentially the next six Premier League matches if the six-week guidance is most accurate.

Ings will also miss out on international duty with England having worked so hard with Saints to get himself back into Gareth Southgate’s thoughts.

Saints are set to be without a number of players for their clash with Newcastle on Friday after a mini injury crisis.

Ryan Bertrand and Jake Vokins are both doubts and this could mean a player filling in at left-back whilst playing out of position.

Jan Bednarek, Ibrahima Diallo and Will Smallbone have all had problems in the last two weeks but could come back into the squad after late fitness tests.
