Southampton return to St Mary’s this Friday and will be looking to maintain their strong run of form when facing Newcastle United.

A 4-3 win over Aston Villa last weekend saw Saints hit top form in the first-half and streak into a three-goal lead thanks to James Ward-Prowse’s set-piece execution. Danny Ings then added a superb fourth shortly into the second period.

However, second-half injuries seemed to interrupt an otherwise dominant display and Jack Grealish inspired Villa hit back with three goals of their own.

Ahead of their meeting with Newcastle though, Ralph Hasenhuttl has given an update on the fitness of his squad and will have some selection issues to contend with.

Perhaps the biggest problem is at left-back where both main options are to miss this match.

Ryan Bertrand picked up a hamstring injury at Villa Park, whilst Hasenhuttl has also confirmed that backup Jake Vokins is also injured. This potentially means that Kyle Walker-Peters will have to fill in on the left as Yan Valery takes his normal right-back role.

It remains to be seen whether Jan Bednarek, Ibrahima Diallo and Will Smallbone will be fit after recent issues of their own, but Mohammed Salisu is still not ready to come in for his first appearance for the club.

As is well known, Danny Ings will be out for four to six weeks as he recovers from knee surgery that he requires to sort his meniscus cartilage pain.

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce has confirmed that he has a strong squad available for his side’s trip to St Mary’s tomorrow.

Jonjo Shelvey, Dwight Gayle, Matt Ritchie and Martin Dubravka are long-term absentees but Bruce will have the same player that he had to choose from in the Magpies’ 2-1 win over Everton.

Both teams have enjoyed good starts to the campaign and both will be looking to claim the three points on offer here.
