Southampton have reacted to being knocked off the top of the Premier League after a two-day stay at the top-flight’s summit.

Saints claimed 1st position in the top division for the first time since 1988 when they comfortably beat Newcastle United on Friday evening.

However, Spurs’ win over West Brom earlier today saw Jose Mourinho’s side push Saints aside and move one point ahead of them.

Liverpool and Leicester can also move above both Saints and Spurs if they manage to win later on.

After a few days of going viral on social media – mainly thanks to their “STOP THE COUNT” tweet – Saints reacted with the following tweet this afternoon:

Despite the jokey atmosphere around Saints finding themselves with one of the best records in the league so far this season, it cannot be argued that they deserved to be where they were for Friday and Saturday.

More from Saints Marching

Two early losses to Crystal Palace and Spurs and a Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Brentford had seen Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side looking seriously out of form.

However, five wins and a draw since then have seen them accumulate the 16 points that were good enough for top until today.

Because of their excellent form, it is possible that the international break over the next two weeks will be disruptive. It could certainly be a positive though given how many injuries the club is dealing with right now.

Danny Ings’ absence will be felt but a quick recovery could see him return to action just one or two weeks after the international break is over.

Ryan Bertrand is also a key player and will have some useful time to resolve his hamstring problem, whilst knocks that other players had before the meeting with Newcastle could also disappear in the next fortnight.

A tough away trip to Wolves arrives for Hasenhuttl and his men when they return to domestic action, but there is every chance that they will continue their form given that each player understands their style so well.
