COVID-19 travel restrictions look set to limit the international involvements for at least two Southampton players over the next two weeks.

Defender Jannik Vestergaard was due to play in up to three international fixtures for Denmark over the next two weeks but is now likely to remain in England.

Danish players will not be able to travel back to their homeland after an outbreak of the virus in Denmark’s mink farms. Iceland’s meeting with Denmark is still expected to go ahead but they could also see Premier League players prevented from travelling due to government ruling.

As well as Vestergaard, this ruling will affect many other Premier League players and will limit Denmark’s ability to field a strong team in any of their fixtures versus Sweden, Iceland and Belgium.

More from Saints Marching

Kasper Schmeichel, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Andreas Christensen, Jonas Lossl, Robin Olsen, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Emile Krafth, Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Runar Alex Runarsson are just a few of the names who will not play in these fixtures.

Saints captain James Ward-Prowse may have his time with England affected too.

England are due to be playing a Nations League fixture against Iceland at Wembley on the 18th November but current rules would mean the visitors not being allowed to enter the UK having already played in Denmark. Sky Sports are reporting that this could see England having to forfeit the result.

Ward-Prowse has been called up to Gareth Southgate’s latest squad and could still add to his four senior international caps in fixtures against the Republic of Ireland and Belgium.

Shane Long will hope to be involved versus England after being named in Ireland’s group of players, whilst Michael Obafemi could get game time for Ireland’s Under-21s.

Moussa Djenepo, Jan Bednarek and Stuart Armstrong complete the international call-ups for Saints and will all hope to return to the South Coast in good shape to resume Premier League action.
