Jack Stephens Comes up Big

With the unfortunate injury to Jannik Vestergaard, Jack Stephens now has the opportunity to reinsert himself into the manager’s thoughts. If the night’s action is any indication, then the Gaffer will have a selection headache in his near future.

Stephens didn’t put a foot wrong all match and his effort and desire were on full display as the game pushed towards the hour mark.

Liverpool dominated the second half as Saints rarely broke free of the pressure. A Kyle Walker Peters throw in within the Saints third results in a Liverpool free kick within a matter of seconds.

The ball is hit long only for Walker Peters to win the aerial ball. The full-back can’t maintain possession as it eventually comes under the inevitable control of a man in a turquoise shirt.

Now stationed just outside the penalty area Georginio Wijnaldum, sadio Mane, and Thiago Alcântara get to work. The trio manage a series of passes which eventually breaks promisingly for the former SFC man.

The Senegalese international advances into the box and looks to fire past Forster on the angle. Jack Stephens has other ideas though, as he shows a nice burst of speed to get level with Mane, before executing a perfectly timed block to push the ball away.

The goalkeeper may have had the attempt covered, but the defender’s act of bravery brilliantly demonstrates the team’s commendable work ethic and determination to fight to the last.
