Southampton have been predicted to finish in a comfortable mid-table position in the Premier League this season based on a number of factors.

Both Sky Sports and the Football Observatory (Projected rankings post) have Saints ending 2020/21 in 12th place but have a two point difference in the final total they see Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side finishing with.

Looking at the performance of each team to date based on goals scored, goals conceded and points per game, Sky Sports see Saints getting 19 more points between now and May and taking their overall total to 48.

This would be four points fewer than their total at the end of 2019/20 when that total was enough for an 11th-placed finish.

Football Observatory have taken more stats into account as they try and predict what the Premier League will look like at its conclusion.

They have used shots on target, shots inside the box – both attempted and conceded – possession and plays for/against in the final third of the pitch, and this has Saints ending on 50 points.

Importantly, both predicted tables see Ralph Hasenhuttl and his men staying well away from a relegation battle.

Given the bad run that they are on at the moment, it’s fair to say that Saints would take a 12th-placed finish if it was given to them now.

The top 10 is still in reach if things improve quickly but, with six league defeats on the bounce, the focus will be on securing that Premier League status and building for another charge towards the higher positions in a post-pandemic world.

Three games coming in the next two weeks will be crucial for Hasenhuttl’s team if they are to get back to performing to their best levels once again.

Chelsea arrive at St Mary’s on Saturday and will provide a stern test. Leeds and Everton – both inconsistent this season – are then faced away from home on 23rd February and 1st March respectively.

Get back on track in these three games and Saints can hit another three with real confidence.

An away trip to Sheffield United, a home clash with Brighton and then that FA Cup Quarter-Final against Bournemouth are upcoming and could see the club all but confirm Premier League safety whilst booking that Semi-Final berth at Wembley.
