Manager, Goalkeeper and Defenders

Ralph Hasenhuttl, Manager – 7

He’s having to manage his players and the amount of football they each play individually because of the injury list limiting an already tight squad. Maybe this played a part in the loss, but keeping key players fit will be vital for the long run.

Besides, Nathan Tella showed what he can offer given his first Premier League start.

Alex McCarthy, Goalkeeper – 5

A very mixed evening overall. Some crucial saves to keep the score at 1-0 in a period where Saints were looking to get back into the contest, but then two soft goals that he should really have saved.

Ralph Hasenhuttl may consider putting Fraser Forster in just to change things up and inject a different energy.

Jan Bednarek, Right-Back – 4

Given a torrid time, particularly in the second half. Not his fault given he is having to play out of position.

Jannik Vestergaard, Centre-Back – 4

Should have blocked Bamford’s shot for the first and pulled out of position for the second goal.

Unfortunate with a couple of headers from Ward-Prowse set-pieces.

Mohammed Salisu, Centre-Back – 5

Showing strong signs in his first performances but was part of a second half defensive showing where the backline looked disjointed.

Ryan Bertrand, Left-Back – 5

Not able to force enough down the left with his flank the main attacking outlet for Saints on the night.
