Adam Armstrong

More information from the Athletic’s Dan Sheldon suggests Saints will push on with their pursuit of Armstrong, whilst other reports on Wednesday evening suggested an agreement with Blackburn was close.

On paper, the 24-year-old looks to be a very similar player to Danny Ings and has seen his similar style earn him a reputation as one of the best goalscorers in the Championship.

However, the ultimate test will be proving himself at Premier League level, which he undoubtedly looks ready to do.

29 goals in 43 appearances during the 2020/21 would normally have seen his club battling for promotion, but a strange campaign for Blackburn saw them finish 15th in the Championship table.

If their star striker is to depart before the 31st August transfer deadline, Blackburn will be wanting as much money as possible to enable their own recruitment drive. Armstrong has just one year remaining on his contract, but a 40% sell-on fee held by Newcastle United (via the Sun) only complicates things.
