Southampton will be looking to see if any opportunities arise to make a late signing on transfer deadline day.

Ralph Hasenhuttl has confirmed that he still wants an extra central-midfielder if possible but any incomings will be reliant on desirable players becoming available, which they often do as the hours tick down on the final day of every window.

Some players are expected to leave on loan too with the futures of Yan Valery and Michael Obafemi of particular interest.

We will keep updating this live blog throughout today when anything of note happens involving Saints, whilst some of the other notable Premier League moves may appear on the feed below too.

8:15pm – Blackmore suggests no more incomings

BBC Radio Solent reporter Adam Blackmore has taken to Twitter to suggest that Saints are done in terms of signings in this window.

It seems that Michael Obafemi’s departure and any other outgoings being kept under the radar will be all that is left for the club to confirm.

6:05pm: SAINTS NEWS KLAXON – Obafemi exit close

The Athletic and Dorset Live’s Jacob Tanswell are reporting that Michael Obafemi is set to join Swansea City on a permanent deal. The Swans are expected to sell striker Jamal Lowe to Championship rivals Bournemouth.

Saints have added strikers Adam Armstrong and Armando Broja to their ranks this summer and that has seemingly pushed academy graduate Obafemi out the door.

4:30pm: Can Saints follow their Premier League rivals?

Around six-and-a-half hours remain for Saints to get a signing over the line if they can and other top-flight clubs are getting their own deals done.

Leeds have announced the signing of Dan James from Manchester United for a fee reported to be close to £30m, whilst Newcastle United have brought in 19-year-old striker Santiago Munoz.

No, that isn’t Santiago Munez of from the GOAL! movies, although there are plenty of film references in the replies to Newcastle’s announcement tweet.

3:10pm: Could Saints take advantage of Leicester loans?

More on the Hamza Choudhury situation – the Athletic’s Rob Tanner is reporting that Leicester will be loaning out up to three players, with Choudhury and Nampalys Mendy said to have interest in their signatures.

Tanner suggests that Choudhury’s loan to Newcastle is “50/50” and that he has more teams to go to if this move breaks down. It remains to be seen whether both Choudhury and Mendy will be allowed to leave with Dennis Praet also on his way out the door.

1:25pm: Loosely linked player becomes available

Hamza Choudhury – loosely linked with Saints in the past – is not joining Newcastle United on loan from Leicester City despite previous reports from other media outlets claiming a deal was close, according to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope.

The Athletic’s Rob Tanner also confirms that Choudhury has other options if his move to the North East does not go through, but whether he would see a place for himself at St Mary’s with strong competition for places is another matter.

The lack of a new signing will also have a knock-on effect for Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff, who has also been loosely linked to Saints before but will now surely stay at St James’ Park with other midfield options limited.

12:30pm: One to keep an eye on?

Arsenal man Ainsley Maitland-Niles was subject of a rejected bid from Everton yesterday and now his social media post seems to have got him into hot water.

According to multiple journalists including John Cross of the Mirror, the player has been told he will not be training with the first-team.

Saints were linked with Maitland-Niles back in January and a report from the Mirror this summer suggested that they would reignite that interest in this window.

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein though, the 23-year-old wants to play as a full-back and would be likely to take a central-midfield role with Saints.

12:20pm: No signings yet, but why not reminisce

Saints have made some big signings on past transfer deadline days and some of them have paid off more than others. Let’s hope they are able to add to this list today.

12:05pm: SAINTS NEWS KLAXON – Valery set to stay

Via the Athletic’s live transfer blog, Dan Sheldon is reporting that Yan Valery will be staying at St Mary’s this season. Reports yesterday suggested that a loan deal had been agreed with Olympiacos.

Strong competition remains ahead of the young Frenchman but it appears that Ralph Hasenhuttl wants to retain the current depth he has.

11:30am: Loftus-Cheek set for Chelsea stay

Reported Saints target Ruben Loftus-Cheek is looking likely to stay at Chelsea this summer. The Express mentioned St Mary’s as a potential destination for the England international back in May.

Now though, the Telegraph’s Matt Law is reporting that he will remain at Stamford Bridge. Saints cannot sign Loftus-Cheek on loan anyway after signing Armando Broja from Chelsea earlier in this window and would almost certainly be priced out of a permanent deal.

The Daily Mail have recently suggested that Saints were one of the clubs looking to sign defender Jack Hendry from Oostende.

He only signed with his current club from Celtic at the start of this transfer window but, via Sky Sports, could now be joining Club Brugge.

10:10am: Deals kicking off in Premier League

It may be relatively early but deals have already started to filter through in the top-flight.

  • Manchester United have officially confirmed the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo
  • West Ham have signed Nikola Vlasic from CSKA Moscow for a reported fee of £30m
  • Spurs rumoured to be targeting Wolves winger Adama Traore and Barcelona’s Emerson Royal
  • Leicester looking to add Ademola Lookman from RB Leipzig

10am: Previous deadline day record provides hope

Saints have made many deadline day signings over the years and some of them have appeared out of nowhere. Today has the feel of being quiet, but so did the days when Danny Ings, Takumi Minamino or Kevin Danso were signed.

Other clubs will make late decisions on whether to let potential Saints targets leave – importantly, one more loan signing is allowed at St Mary’s.

9:55am: Good morning, Saints fans!

Will they add? Won’t they? Well, they’d certainly like to if they get the chance.

Saints will surely be on the lookout for any players that could become available to them during today’s madness and a central-midfielder is particularly desired. However, their excellent business so far means that it will not matter if someone new does not arrive before 11pm tonight.
