Strikers and Substitutes

Adam Armstrong, Striker – 8

Typically ran and pressed all evening but this game will be remembered as the one where he scored his first home goal, and what a goal it was.

Summing up his striker’s instinct, he struck a superb half-volley in from just outside the area when nothing much looked on. Hopefully the second of a hatful of Premier League goals for Southampton

Che Adams, Striker – 7

An evening’s hard work was almost rewarded when his flicked header looked destined from the top corner, but Emiliano Martinez sprung to his right to palm away.

Lyanco, 1st Substitute – 6

Not much involvement for him overall in his 34 minutes on the pitch but his presence and move to a back three certainly halted a steady flow of Villa pressure at the start of the second-half.

Ibrahima Diallo, 2nd Substitute – N/A

On for Mohamed Elyounoussi late on but looked out of place out wide. Much more suited to a central position, as shown in his brief spell in the side whilst Ward-Prowse was suspended.

Armando Broja, 3rd Substitute – N/A

Just nine minutes to influence things. Will become a key player again after the upcoming international break, where he will hope to play a big part for Albania.
