Leeds United are continuing to intensify their pursuit of Shea Charles, with reports suggesting the club have submitted a bid worth more than £20 million to Southampton for the highly-rated midfielder.

The Northern Ireland international appears increasingly likely to leave St Mary's this summer, but the prospect of his departure has not gone down well with Southampton supporters. Many Saints fans have taken to social media to express their frustration, warning both Leeds supporters and Charles himself that they have witnessed similar situations before.

However, history shows that the outcome is rarely straightforward. While some talented youngsters have left Southampton and gone on to reach new heights elsewhere, others have seen their careers stall after departing the south coast. With Charles seemingly edging closer to the exit door, Southampton may soon be forced into the market for a replacement. The question is: who are the most realistic candidates to fill the void?

Josh Mulligan

The Scottish midfielder has attracted interest from a number of clubs across the Championship and Premier League, including Wolves, West Ham and now Southampton, as he looks poised to take the next step in his career just a year after joining Hibernian.

The former Scotland youth international made 33 appearances as Hibs secured a fifth-place finish in the Premiership, although his impact was felt most strongly during the first half of the campaign. An ankle injury disrupted his season after the turn of the year, limiting his opportunities, but his performances during those opening months had already done enough to catch the attention of scouts further south.

And this is not simply a lazy Scottish comparison, but Mulligan shares many of the qualities that have made John McGinn such a success in the Premier League. He is a powerful, energetic box-to-box midfielder who thrives when driving forward with the ball, covering ground and competing in physical battles.

David Ozoh

David Ozoh is a physically imposing, tough-tackling midfielder who could prove an ideal replacement for Shea Charles. While he lacks Charles' goal threat, he excels at breaking up play and shielding the defence, allowing full-backs and attacking midfielders greater freedom to push forward.

The Crystal Palace youngster has spent the past two seasons on loan at Derby County, earning a strong reputation in the Championship for his maturity, technical ability and commanding presence in midfield.

Jens Hjertø-Dahl

The Norway Under-21 international is attracting interest from across Europe and could be an ideal target if Southampton are serious about building a squad capable of returning to the Premier League. A move from Tromsø would represent a significant step up, but the midfielder has already shown the quality to make that transition.

He has scored five goals in 12 Eliteserien appearances this season, demonstrating the attacking threat that would help offset the loss of Shea Charles. Comfortable on either foot, he offers energy, technical quality and an eye for goal from midfield.

Southampton may need to move quickly, however, with Benfica, Sporting CP and several Bundesliga clubs reportedly keeping tabs on his progress after potential moves to Rangers and Beşiktaş failed to materialise in January.
