Manager Russell Martin has tried three players in the left-back role this season, and his former Swansea star seems to be the best option in his tactical setup. Despite not making any Premier League appearance for the Saints before facing Arsenal, Manning's impressive rise has seen a large section of the Southampton fans wondering why he wasn't given more playing time in the first few matches.
Manning formed a rock-solid defensive partnership with Kyle Walker-Peters on the left-side of the defence in the Arsenal match, and performed well as a left midfielder against Leicester City. Martin played Walker-Peters in his preferred left-back position to allow Manning to advance further down the left flank to create more goalscoring opportunities.
