Forgotten Southampton attacker Ben Brereton Diaz has the perfect opportunity to deliver the scoring goods in Still's leadership and reclaim his lineup spot with Shankland set to stay away from St. Mary's for now.
On the weekend, Southampton fans started connecting the dots regarding Lawrence Shankland's Saudi top-flight move. Even moving to other Asian leagues was a probability but those speculations ended fruitlessly, similar to Kyle Walker-Peters' rumoured transfer teaser.
In the words of Fabrizio Romano: "Understand Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland has agreed to re-sign at the club."
Now, Shankland's full-circle Hearts plot twist will have taken many fans by surprise but there is one Southampton ace who will feel relieved with this news. Pulling off the curtains on the suspense, that transfer winner is goal less forward Ben Brereton Diaz.
Diaz needs to better Stewart in finishing aspects
I agree, Diaz has been a shadow of his Blackburn Rovers days at Southampton but he's not the first one to flop badly in his inaugural season. Here, Adam Armstrong is another former Rovers attacker who has found it tough to go strength to strength in front of goal but the Saints have extended their trust in him all these years.
Though that reliance is on the verge of ending, it could be a blessing in disguise for the Chilean striker.
Firstly, he has joined the ongoing preseason meaning he has a fair chance of receiving a fresh slate under Still. Plus, Ross Stewart's man of the match worthy Arsenal performance was applauded by the fans but the latter has only one more Saints goal than the 26-year-old despite a full year's difference between both recruitments.
Consequently, the duo are on the same preference level in the front three ranks with Diaz knowing that a few early goals in friendlies may see him edge past Stewart in the starting lineup.
