So the academy conveyor belt spits another one out. Rento Takaoka has passed a medical and is about to make a permanent move to Belgian second division side K. Patro Eisden Maasmechelen.
Kazu Kakiuchi of the Japanese outlet Sponichi got the story first, before The72 ran with it on the 26th July. Clubs don't put a teenager through a medical unless the paperwork is nearly there, so treat this one as good as done.
A short stay that never caught fire
Cast your mind back to March 2025. That's when Takaoka turned up from Nissho Gakuen High School, finally old enough to honour the pre-contract he'd signed the summer before, and plenty of people fancied him to kick on.
Why wouldn't they? He'd worn Japan's shirt from Under 17 to Under 20 and bagged all four of their group-stage goals at the 2023 Under 17 World Cup, so the kid could clearly play.
Then came the Valenciennes loan, which looked a tidy fit given the French club sat under the same Sport Republic umbrella as the Saints. It went nowhere.
A stress fracture in his foot wrecked the season, and by the time he limped back to the south coast he'd managed just 16 games and three goals.
It's all there on his FotMob page: 549 minutes, three goals. Transfermarkt, for what it's worth, rates him at about £128,000.
Hardly the profile of a lad Southampton would go to the wall for, is it? He leaves without so much as a senior minute for the club, though nobody is really doubting the talent.
Why this suits everyone
For a 19-year-old crying out for games, this is the right call. Belgium's second tier has turned plenty of young forwards into sellable assets, so a good run there could earn him a step back up.
It does jar a little with how Southampton usually work, mind. Coverage of the Kuryu Matsuki blueprint spelled out the club's habit of easing Japanese teenagers in gradually, loan by loan.
A clean sale after one wrecked year doesn't quite fit that. The ability was never in doubt, though, and Saints Marching praised the finishing and composure he flashed for Japan at the Asian Under 20 Cup, where he struck while trailing to rescue a point.
One injury-hit year left him buried in a crowded attack, so a reset abroad gives him the football Southampton couldn't. He's still only 19, so there is time on his side.
None of it dents the bigger picture either, because that five-star Category One academy keeps churning out talent. Tyler Dibling walked the same Staplewood path to stardom, and plenty more are queuing up behind him.
There's a promotion job to focus on as well. Southampton open 2026/27 in the Championship on minus four points, so polishing teenagers slides down the to-do list.
Verdict:Â 2/5. A cheap punt on a gifted kid for Patro Eisden, but the slim output and that broken loan leave his ceiling a guess.
Likelihood:Â 4/5. Medical done and a named reporter on it, so barring a late twist the announcement is a formality.
The Saints wave off a small loss here. Both sides look better for a clean break.
