Charlie Taylor's exit route denied due to €15.5m former Saints academy left-back

Charlie Taylor has suffered a massive summer blow with Middlesbrough closing their arrival route for the current Saints man in favour of a past one.

With Mads Roerslev, Will Still has a set of six natural fullbacks and the former is barely getting to blend within the dressing room. Yet, Southampton have put the 26-year-old to pace on the bench.

You delve into whether that's a rest deprived situation or Still is spot on, but did you observe a funny twist? If Roerslev gets to take off his substitute shirt then he can out-appear Charlie Taylor in the league, let alone get a full half and stack up more minutes than the Englishman has this season.

How about some transfer discussions keeping Taylor occupied, it can be partly true but even then, he will be counting down his summer alternatives because one good transfer boat just sailed by.

Charlie Taylor loses Middlesbrough preference to former Saint Matt Targett

The Middlesbrough one, which had a genuine requirement for Taylor yet that spot has been re-filled by someone else, whom Southampton fans won't call a stranger though.

Breaking down this update, Alex Crook put in his words: "NUFC defender Matt Targett set to join Boro on loan."

Targett has a well-liked academy star's image in Saints circles and his appealing €15.5m sale is proof of his all-action defending prowess. Fans had some Luke Shaw judgements ready to do with Targett once he gets accustomed to the Premier League but hindsight shows the 29-year-old is still a significant mile behind his Red Devils counterpart.

Coming to the current ones, Taylor also included, the recent Newcastle man clears the competition. In the preceding January window, there were even noises he may return home but for now, he has some good playing seasons devoted to Middlesbrough.
