Will Still claims to adapt his playing style in case of unfavourable Premier League challenges, a trait highly missed by Saint's ex-bosses Russell Martin and Ivan Juric.
Officially, it's been a fortnight but honestly, Southampton's managerial search has seen months pass by now. Yet, given the mess at the club, the Saints haven't been able to convince a manager to fix them.
Surprisingly, still, would you believe these months and the search has taught Southampton a lot? Just take a look.
In case you remember, just a month has passed when target boss Liam Rosenior showed the Saints the best way to utilize raw talents like Amo-Ameyaw.
Well, now, it's the like-for-like alternative to Strasbourg’s manager, who is a more feasible Saints target, Will Still giving a fresh lesson. And the subject? Tactical adaptability. A class Southampton flunked repeatedly under previous bosses Russell Martin and Ivan Juric.
Accept it or not, apart from the young side's confidence or quality issues, a lack of versatility for instantaneously demanded playstyle has cost the club big time this season. And the club's ex-gaffers succumbed to the challenge, instead of embracing it.
If that weren’t the case, Championship promotion winner Martin wouldn’t have looked so out of his depth in the top flight. Nor would a seasoned Serie A manager like Juric have looked completely lost.
But did the job really demand miracles? Will Still doesn't think so.
Still presents perfect candidature for Southampton job
As quoted by the Daily Echo, Still said: "If I have to play in certain scenarios, if we've got to play ugly, just play ugly. Win the game, and win the games as often as you can."
That mindset of winning at all costs has been painfully absent at Southampton recently, making these called-for ugly or cheeky wins feel out of Southampton's reach. And if anything, Saints' bosses only made that reality worse.
But, not everything is over yet. Neither Southampton's hopes nor their managerial hunt. A capable manager and they could be on track again.
And let’s be honest, Will Still looks ready-made for the St Mary’s touchline. Deep down, every Southampton fan knows it.
