Finally, Southampton fans can breathe again. Tonda Eckert is a free man, despite a several-month-long FA investigation into his conduct last season.
The Saints head coach has been handed a six-week suspended ban from football and a £28,000 fine after the regulatory body investigated events that unfolded in December 2025, April 2026 and May 2026 during incidents involving opposition training sessions.
In short, it means the season goes on as it was.
Southampton Chairman Dragan Solak will be delighted with the news - and reacted to it in a club statement, taking a swipe at the EFL while praising the FA’s process.
Solak speaks out
Speaking in a statement via the Southampton Football Club website, Chairman Dragan Solak said, “I’m pleased that the independent panel has come to a decision and that we have an outcome. We have already suffered enough, and we appreciate the panel’s recognition of that.
“We are confident the manager has learned from this matter, and a suspended sentence allows him to continue in his role. I firmly believe that Tonda is one of Europe’s most exciting young coaches, and with this distraction removed, I am confident he can lead the team to a successful season.
“I’d like to thank our fans for standing by us and showing the team so much support during a time when we have needed them more than ever.
“The FA process has been a positive experience. Tonda has been given the opportunity to be open and honest with the panel, and the panel has been able to see that he is simply a good person who made poor decisions.
“The same cannot be said for the EFL process, and the way they have subsequently treated us is not something we will forget. However, now is the time to look forward to what I believe will be a great future for our club.”
An interesting statement
It’s a good statement from Solak, who does well to outline a few issues.
The Serbian’s point that the FA process was a positive experience, compared to the EFL’s, is an interesting swipe. The club were handed a huge punishment in May and felt unheard throughout.
The fact that Eckert was “given the opportunity to be open and honest” with the FA is a credit to their workings. Solak labels Eckert as “one of Europe’s most exciting young coaches”, and it’s a huge boost for Southampton, who now know they have the German at the wheel for the future.
One important point Solak raises is about the Southampton fans, who have suffered in the darkness of not knowing where their football club is going and what will happen next. They now know, and will appreciate the Sport Republic investor’s acknowledgement that the club “needed them more than ever”.
The Saints can now move on from the ordeal and look ahead to the future. A clash with rivals Portsmouth on Sunday lunchtime is set to be tasty.
