Eckert must try to find a starting position for this Southampton star

This Southampton star has managed to shine, even as he's regularly had to make do with minimal first-team minutes.

Tonda Eckert caused a slight stir with this Southampton starting XI against Oxford United on Saturday.

Indeed, heading into the game, Saints fans wouldn't have been expecting Cameron Archer to start in attack, with the number 19 chucked in from the start for only the eighth time this season in the Championship.

It was a surprise alteration that worked in spurts, with Archer assisting Shea Charles' game-clinching wonder strike, as the German prepares to utilise his full squad, across some tricky matches to come in the gruelling second tier.

Coming off on the 59th minute mark with zero shots attempted at the U's goal, though, he didn't quite bang down the door to be more of a consistent first team starter. Still, he could fulfil a purpose, down the line.

Eckert does have a lot of attacking options at his disposal, away from the one-time Middlesbrough forward, with Ross Stewart also handed a late run-out, as yet another purposeful body up top.

The Scotsman has managed to pick up five goals this season, from only eight league starts, as he provides Cyle Larin with some healthy competition, in the lone striker position.

Keeping all of his bloated group harmonious is a testament to a manager who has all the players buying into his methods, but Samuel Edozie will surely be champing at the bit for more first-team minutes, as his cameos have been even more impactful than Stewart's as of late.

Why Eckert must try to give Edozie more minutes

At one stage this season, Edozie was completely frozen out of the first team picture.

Staggeringly, his first minutes in the Championship this season came about in February versus Watford, with the former Manchester City forward gradually improving with every cameo he has been gifted.

Edozie would assist Larin's late equaliser at West Bromwich Albion back in February, having only been on the Hawthorns turf for 24 minutes, as he benefitted from Eckert using his squad more freely, with Leo Scienza sidelined through injury.

He must continue to pick the 23-year-old, even when the Brazilian is back to full fitness, as he shone, again, but this time in a number ten role, in the latter stages of the Oxford victory.

Eckert has waxed lyrical across recent matches about Edozie's willingness to get stuck in and complete his "dirty work" for his team, with a gritty nine duels won from a combined 105-minute spell against Norwich City and Matt Bloomfield's determined visitors.

His 31-minute stint against Oxford was a joy to behold, with three key passes also amassed, despite only being unleashed into the game for such a short space of time.

It will be a struggle on the German's end to accommodate Edozie, and keep other first teamers happy with their starting minutes, but he must find a way to gift the Englishman the opportunities he deserves, after so long out of the first team picture.

The number 23 has had to be so patient, and his perserverance has now been rewarded.

It would be a fine close to this chapter of his unfolding St. Mary's story if he played a key role in Southampton returning to the Premier League, with the former England U20 international one of the finest talents Eckert has at his disposal, when he's on top form, and not pushed to the periphery.
