Shea Charles is getting into the habit of scoring iconic goals. This season, the Northern Ireland international midfielder has scored three goals for the Saints.

Each of his three goals has been quite different, but each has been spectacular in its own way. Charles has made a spectacular return to the team after being injured for a long stretch this season.

Charles scores a worldie

At St Mary's today, Charles scored the most spectacular of all three. When Cameron Archer kept the ball moving with a long pass backwards to Charles standing midway in the Oxford half, nobody in the stadium would have expected Charles to shoot first time from 35 yards out.

Charles' first time strike sent the ball high and well outside the right upright. But, as his curling effort got closer to the goal, it dipped and bent like a Roberto Carlos free-kick.

Jamie Cumming, in the Oxford United goal, flung himself high and to his left in an effort to keep the ball out, but he was nowhere near it. Charles' strike was powerful, true and accurately placed.

As the ball flew between the angle of the crossbar and the post, time seemed to stand still inside St Mary's. Then the place went wild.

Charles and his teammates sprinted off to the corner of the Chapel Stand to celebrate a truly iconic goal in front of the Southampton fans.

A dramatic goal in an incredible comeback

Deep in added on time in Gary Linekar country, Shea Charles achieved the unimaginable. Southampton had dragged themselves back level with Leicester after being 3-0 down at half-time.

Then, with time running out, Charles stepped onto a layoff from Ross Stewart. As the Saints fans held their collective breath, his left-footed curling effort sailed into the top corner of the Leicester City net.

What had been deemed almost impossible at the interval had been achieved, and Southampton's unbeaten run in the Championship was extended to five matches.

Where better to score your first goal for the club?

Perhaps a far less iconic goal than his other two for Saints, Charles' equaliser for his side at Anfield in the Carabao Cup was memorable in other ways.

The Saints had made a good fist of things in front of an expectant Anfield crowd. Léo Scienza had missed a sitter in the first half before Alexander Isak (remember him) scored to put Liverpool ahead.

However, Saints were never out of the match and when Shea Charles popped up to score from close range in the 76th minute, the Saints fans in the Anfield Road End of the ground would have been dreaming of a huge cup exit.

Sadly, Charles' goal ended up counting for very little when Hugo Ekitiké rolled in Liverpool's winner with only five minutes of the match remaining.
