Southampton are now only seven games away from finishing their regular 46-game season in the Championship.

They're the most in-form team in the entire hectic division right now, with eight wins and two draws collected across their last ten games, placing them above Coventry City during that near flawless period, who sit at the top of the overall league.

The Saints still need to keep their heads screwed on to consolidate a playoff position, come the end of the gruelling 46-game marathon, as April hurtles into view after the international break concludes.

Indeed, the South Coast giants have a crazy fixture schedule ahead, with a bumper six league games ahead in April, across a frantic 21-day stretch.

Facing off against the likes of Wrexham and Derby County, who are scrapping for that final playoff spot, alongside the confident Saints, this does look like a patch of the season that will make or break Tonda Eckert's men.

Eckert has been speaking to the media, ahead of these pivotal games, with a clear message from the German that his playoff-chasing side must embrace the pressures ahead, rather than being paralysed by the anxiety-inducing matches they will face.

Eckert's clear message about Southampton's run-in

Eckert hasn't looked worried one bit since taking charge of Southampton in early December.

His calm and focused approach has worked wonders on a group of players who looked battered and bruised beyond repair under the short-lived regime of Will Still, with a stunning 15 victories picked up from 26 available in the Championship.

Therefore, the South Coast outfit should be mentally prepared for the challenges they will face in securing the playoffs, but clashes towards the end of the season - when there is a lot on the line - can unnerve even the most hardened first-team individual.

When quizzed on the crunch fixtures ahead for Southampton by the Daily Echo, Eckert was typically self-assured, as he commented on how ready his players were for the battles ahead.

He said: "It's one game after another, and the story is always going to be the same. It just shows that we are in crunch time now. That's what it is.

"Every single game that comes up is going to be a big one, and it's going to be determining of where we end up towards the end of the season.

"I think the players are very much aware of that, of the importance of games. We will have time to improve on a couple of bits also this week.

But the good thing is that I think that we have shown more and more in recent weeks that we are able to win games in different ways."

Of course, it's good talking the talk, but the Saints must also walk the walk when the break is over, by securing that final playoff spot.

Commenting on his team's ability to win games in various ways, whether that be through overpowering the opposition in attack, or grittily getting over the line, Eckert looks to be very sure his team won't make him eat his words, as another trip to Wembley in a playoff final could be on the cards.
