Former Saints skipper reminds Russell Martin to beware of one factor at Rangers

Long-serving Saints skipper Steven Davis has urged Russell Martin to avoid an inconsistent run from the beginning if he wants to avoid a repeat of his last season's exit.

In the 21st century, Southampton have been led by some of the iconic Saints like Matt Le Tissier, Maya Yoshida and Jose Fonte. Now, they were all fan favourites in their regard for leading the team through thick and thin but Steven Davis will remain a nostalgic name in the eyes of the St. Mary's faithful.

The box-to-box midfielder controlled the Saints midfield for almost half a decade and also oversaw the club's upward Premier League trajectory during that timeframe. In today's times, that achievement is comparable to the likes of last season's Nottingham Nottingham and Newcastle United.

As such, Davis also earned the prestige of guiding Southampton to a cup final where everyone knows how the evening ended. Nevertheless, Davis has crafted a standout legacy here which will remain exemplary over the years.

Hence, the 39-year-old possesses a vast knowledge of the ins and outs of the English game and wants Saints hero Russell Martin to follow one of his advice, too.

Martin made aware of the contrast between Saints and Rangers fans

As quoted by the Daily Record, Davis said: "Unfortunately patience isn't a word used in Glasgow."

In all honesty, Davis isn't undermining Southampton but truth be told, the fans know that the club is renowned for avoiding top-flight relegations more than mounting title challenges. Hence, one, two or sometimes even five back-to-back defeats are also forgiven by the Saints supporters.

If you don't agree, then look at the past twelve miserable months where Southampton embarked on multiple of those losing streaks. On the contrary, Martin's new employers are Rangers who will definitely demand answers from him should he go two games without tasting a win.

And if he passes that test, then there will be the constant silverware ask from their fans which is another difficult task to fulfill. Simply put, Russell Martin must roll up his sleeves and get to work strongly in the preseason if he wants to avoid getting sacked again in the middle of the campaign.
