Southampton fans might be feeling sorry for Ruben Selles who has been snubbed by Plymouth Argyle.
A few years ago, former Saints staff member Ruben Selles achieved a feat that only a few managers can imagine in their wildest dreams. He began the preseason as the understudy to respectable Southampton coach Ralph Hassenhuttl but ended the campaign wearing almost every hat possible in first-team coaching.
Yes, even commanded the playing eleven from the dugout. But Selles' unique trait was never giving up which earned him a plethora of applause despite not having many top-flight victories to boast about.
But once that Premier League routine ended, it all went downhill for Selles who was showing the exit door despite not faring worst in his short stint. Still, a top Championship job as a consolation prize could have been on the cards but that too didn't happen.
Selles must take a leaf out of Corberan's book
In fact, fast forward to two more summers and Selles is still being underrated in English footballing circles.
A few days ago, the Spaniard learnt the lofty manager competition at Plymouth Argyle and now the League One club has dashed his faint winnable hopes.
Unsurprisingly, Tom Cleverley who wished to lead the Saints dressing room has officially overtook Selles for the third-division role.
Coming to Selles, it's absolutely not the end of offers for him this summer. But let's be honest, those will either be relegation battling ones or either second-division promotion gaining ones.
Agreed, that's not an attractive situation but Selles knows he needs one eye-catching season or even a half, to land the dream first division jobs. Something which West Brom's ex-gaffer Carlos Corberan experienced in the past six months.
Nowadays, there are a good amount of coaching openings available all across England, so, there are chances that Selles might travel the assisting route again. Whatever be the case, let's wish the best to Selles for this transfer market.
