Former Southampton midfielder Oriel Romeu has traced his steps back to Barcelona after his loan stint but his future is as much in the air as Nathan Redmond's.

In recent days, Southampton fans have seen one of their forgotten but impressive former player, Michail Antonio falling out of favour in terms of playing contracts. Now, as harsh as it may seem, it's the nature of the closing week of June where rarely any exit-linked player gets his wishes fulfilled irrespective of the significance that club holds in their career.

Plus, boyhood clubs aren't any exception either. After all, no Saint knows whether Nathan Redmond's willing efforts to secure one last Birmingham City dance will turn fruitful throughout the off-season.

If it happens, brilliant for him but if it doesn't then as a matter of consolation, Redmond won't be the only former St. Mary's hero getting denied a chance to call the sport quits where his journey began.

Redmond and Romeu lie in the same transfer boat

That's because his Saints midfield counterpart Oriol Romeu is also staring at the growing fears of another summer club search. As pointed out by Barca Universal, Romeu's struggling Girona loan has resulted in him coming back to his parent club Barcelona.

From the outside, there will hardly be any current Southampton player who will turn down the opportunity to stay at Barcelona, even Romeu wouldn't wish against it. However, the bitter reality is that the 33-year-old has lined up in three different kits in as many years, therefore, Romeu has an uphill task at hand if he opts to convince his current employers to retain him.

It's sad but the defensive midfielder doesn't have much transfer say as things stand, especially not in a Champions League favourites Barcelona side. That being said, Southampton can always do great with his wealth of experience in English football if Still gives his approval.

Ultimately, let's hope that Romeu gets a decent top-flight club soon, or at least gives into a Southampton comeback idea.
