Southampton explore free agent option in Asmir Begovic, who holds an unforgettable Guinness World Record against them.
Admit it or not, but Aaron Ramsdale's saga has been Southampton's biggest headache this summer. And with all the mixed signals received so far, no one knows how the player would end up in this transfer window.
Yet, one thing is certain, Southampton will not see the services of Ramsdale in the upcoming Championship spell. Intriguingly, looking for a replacement should be their go-to job, but the club's forward-line business has kept them quite busy for the task.
Nonetheless, some recent links have just added another option to consider for their keeping reinforcement. And, surprisingly, it's a name no Saints fan would be completely unfamiliar with.
Well, he's 38-year-old soon-to-be free agent Asmir Begovic.
Despite having had a career stretched over 20 years now, football fans, and especially Saints remember the keeper for his 2015 Guinness World Record goal.
Asmir Begovic emerges as a surprise option for Southampton
In case you didn't know, Begovic set the record for the farthest goal scored in the history of the sport. While playing for Stoke, the keeper netted from a staggering 91.9m distance in the 2013/14 season against Southampton, setting a feat for which he will go down as one of the distinguished keepers.
Interestingly, in a surprise turn, no Saints fan saw coming, Begovic is on Southampton's transfer radar this summer.
As per Football Insider, the Saints are active alongside Championship counterparts Leicester in monitoring Begovic's situation. In case a deal happens, it could be the 38-year-old's final dance in the English division.
Honestly, having continued with keeping icon Fraser Forster till 34, Begovic's option shouldn't surprise the fans. Yet, with the keeper far beyond his prime, it isn't certain whether the supporters will buy into the idea of signing him at 38.
Overall, Asmir Begovic could be a short-term successor for Ramsdale if the latter returns after a spell. But, in the end, Saints fans are tipped to have the authoritative final say on this signing.
