Keep, sell, loan or terminate? Caspar Jander is the one call that makes itself

Caspar Jander is one of the best players Southampton have had in years. Selling him is also one of the easiest decisions they will make this summer.

Caspar Jander has been one of the best things about Southampton's season. The 23-year-old has recorded two goals, one assist and 2,556 minutes in the Championship this season, averaging a FotMob rating of 7.08.

That rating places him above Flynn Downes and makes him one of the most consistent midfielders in the division.

Southampton signed him for £10.5 million in August 2025. His current market value sits at around £18 million. For a player who has grown considerably since arriving at St Mary's, that figure already looks like it is moving in one direction only.

The decision Southampton face this summer is straightforward. Sell him well and use the money wisely.

The numbers back up Jander's obvious quality

The assists figure dropped sharply in his first Championship season, but the consistency of his rating tells a better story.

Saints Marching noted that Jander does the majority of his work in defensive transitions, closing down quickly and harrying players in possession, qualities that would make him an ideal fit for a Bundesliga club where the pace of the game is comparable to the Premier League.

He has not just survived in the Championship. He has grown. Jander's performance against Manchester City at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-final proved just how far he has come.

Home is calling for Jander

Reports emerged earlier this season that Jander was unhappy in his personal life, with his girlfriend, boxer Carlotta Schünemann, living at home in Germany. BILD reported that a return to his homeland is very likely this summer.

RB Leipzig, VfB Stuttgart and Ajax are among the clubs reportedly interested, with FC Nürnberg holding a 10 per cent sell-on clause in any Southampton sale.

Southampton cannot compete with that kind of pull. A player who is homesick and has Champions League-level clubs interested in signing him is not going to be convinced to stay in the Championship on minus four points.

Trying to keep him would be a waste of energy. Selling him to the right club at the right price is the only sensible play.

Saints Marching acknowledged as much back in March, noting that Southampton had already tied down his obvious replacement with a new contract, describing it as clever business that secured the club's future in midfield.

Cameron Bragg has shown enough this season to suggest he is ready to step into a starting role. He is younger, cheaper and hungry to prove himself at this level.

Jander has been a joy to watch. His technical quality, his work rate and his reading of the game are all well above Championship standard. The Bundesliga is the right home for him.

Southampton should cash in, hand Johannes Spors the money and trust him to do what he has already shown he can do. Good recruitment built this squad once. It can build it again.
