Keep, sell, loan, or terminate? James Bree has already made the decision easy

James Bree's contract runs out in days. With everything going on at Southampton this summer, his situation risks being missed. That would be a serious mistake.

James Bree's contract expires on June 30. In any other summer, that would be a straightforward conversation. This summer, with spygate chaos swirling around everything at Southampton, there is a real risk his situation gets overlooked.

It should not be. Bree deserves a new deal and Southampton should get it done quickly.

Since returning from his Charlton loan in January, Bree has been one of Southampton's top performers, proving paramount to the fluid formation change to a back four.

Tonda Eckert was clear about what his return brought to the squad. "I think with James Bree coming in on Monday, there's also a little bit more chance to maybe tweak the way we set up," the manager said.

That tweak worked. Southampton did not look back.

The numbers tell their own story

The numbers from his return to St Mary's stand out immediately. Two goals and two assists in 12 appearances at a rating of 7.1 is his best return in a Southampton shirt by some distance.

Southampton signed him from Luton for just £750,000. At 28, he is experienced, reliable and available at virtually no cost beyond his wages.

A player who wants to stay

After his match-winning goal against Leicester City in the FA Cup, Bree told the Daily Echo: "I've loved my time here over three years. It's not all been smooth sailing personally, but I love the club. If there is something I can do to extend it, I would definitely love to do it.“

Those are not the words of a player angling for a move. They are the words of someone genuinely invested in the project at St Mary's.

Charlton boss Nathan Jones tried to muddy the waters by suggesting Bree had not wanted to return to Southampton, but Eckert shut that down firmly, saying: "He says that he's fully invested in this project, no matter what happens in the summer."

Southampton face a brutal Championship season starting on minus four points. They need players who know the club, know the league and want to fight for the badge. Bree ticks every box.

Could he make the step up to the Premier League? That is a fair question. But with promotion looking at least another season away, it is not the right question right now.

The right question is whether Bree can help Southampton through a long and difficult Championship campaign.

After what he showed in the second half of this season, the answer is obvious.

Sign him up. Get it done.
